The Brookings-CUNY Project on Internal Displacement has just released a Selected Bibliography on the Global Crisis of Internal Displacement. This 73-page bibliography authored by Gimena Sxc3xa1nchez-Garzoli is an effort to compile and catalog the substantial materials on the study of internal displacement. It contains more than 800 items.

The bibliography includes various thematic categories: basic texts and sources of information, web resources, early writings on internal displacement, general overview of displacement caused by conflict and human rights violations, displacement caused by development projects, legal framework including the Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement, institutional framework, vulnerable groups, protection strategies, return, resettlement and reintegration, and development strategies.

Geographical categories include region specific listings for Africa, the Americas, Asia, the Middle East and Europe, and 56 individual country listings. Although the majority of the items listed are in English, some noteworthy Spanish publications are also included. SOURCE:

Executive Outcomes: Mercenary Corporation OSINT Guide

The open source references contained in this resource guide pertain to the recently defunct South Africa based mercenary corporation Executive Outcomes (EO) which operated as "mining and oil industry shock troops." The references span the 1994 through 1999 period. EO activities, from its founding in 1989 through 1993, escaped the attention of the world media. With EO's increasing involvement in Angola and later Sierra Leone and Papua New Guinea, this mercenary corporation lost much of its transparency. As a result, its activities became increasingly scrutinized by the press, defense researchers, and other concerned parties.

With the passage of the new anti-mercenary law in South Africa, EO closed its doors 1 January 1999. The "mercenary corporation EO" thus officially existed from 1989 through 1998. As of March 1999, however, the EO Pretoria office was still open, with its associates most likely continuing their activities at a greatly reduced level of visibility under the banner of Lifeguard, Saracen, or another security firm linked to EO.
This bibliography on human security aims to be representative of, rather than wholly inclusive of every context in which the term "human security" is used. Its purpose is twofold: 1) to provide a fairly comprehensive, useful and up-to-date reference on the topic, for use by scholars and policymakers alike, and 2) to present a range of definitions and thoughts on the term, as it has been used by those who write about it, because there is as of yet, no definitive or agreed upon definition.
In response to the need for more research on displaced persons, the Committee on Population developed the Roundtable on the Demography of Forced Migration in 1999. This activity, which is supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, provides a forum in which a diverse group of experts can discuss the state of knowledge about demographic structures and processes among people who are displaced by war and political violence, famine, natural disasters, or government projects or programs that destroy their homes and communities. The roundtable includes representatives from operational agencies, with long-standing field and administrative experience. It includes researchers and scientists with both applied and scholarly expertise in medicine, demography, and epidemiology. The group also includes representatives from government, international organizations, donors, universities, and nongovernmental organizations. SOURCE:

The field of transitional justice has grown exponentially over the past two decades and this is reflected in the growing number of publications on the subject. Whilst there are a handful of bibliographies on transitional justice available on the internet, the listing of resources on this site aims to address two apparant gaps in the information available to researchers in Africa. The first is the need for a compilation of resources relevant to transitional justice work in Africa. Second is the need for an annotated listing of transitional justice related documents available in French. SOURCE:

This report evaluates the existing literature on children and armed conflict, including

academic as well as more practice oriented perspectives. The literature surveyed is are mostly

from the second half of the 1990s, since the time of the Machel report (1996). However, some of

it goes farther back to the 1980s and the early 1990s focusing on more enduring conflict

situations like Northern Ireland#, and Palestine. The major portion of the literature focuses on

continental Africa, especially Sudan, Mozambique, Liberia, Rwanda and Sierra Leone. Almost

all the cases of major conflicts involving or affecting a high percentage of civilian populations is

covered in the literature in varying degrees, with some exceptions such as East Timor and

Myanmar in South and South-East Asia, Iraq and Turkey in West Asia, Peru, El Salvador,

Mexico, Haiti in South America, and Chechnya in Europe. SOURCE:

Over the past decade, the international community has become

increasingly aware of the issue of child soldiers and has attempted to

address it by adopting new international and regional legal norms to

protect children against voluntary or forced recruitment into armed

forces. Nevertheless, child soldiers still exist in at least 20 countries

and their number, about 300,000, is believed to have remained constant.

In order for strategies for prevention, demobilisation and reintegration

to have sustained effects however it is necessary to tackle the

root causes of the problem.

The fate of war victims, in particular children - who are especially

vulnerable to the consequences of armed conflict - is a high priority of

Swiss foreign policy. Switzerland has played an active role in drawing

up and adopting the above-mentioned legal instruments and is committed

to promoting their universal ratification without reservations,

as well as their# effective implementation. In keeping with this priority,

Switzerland will continue to ensure that the protection of children during

and after armed conflicts is adequately reflected in the policy

agenda of the international community.

The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) works closely

with relevant international organisations as well as non-governmental

organisations, such as the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers.

It supports specific activities aimed at disarming, demobilising, rehabilitating

and reintegrating child soldiers. SOURCE:

This bibliography contains a list of articles published in response to the article "Mortality after the 2003 invasion of Iraq: a cross-sectional sample survey," published on 12 October in the Lancet. Based on a population-based survey conducted at some risk by a team of Iraqi and American public health researchers, the article reports that approximately 600,000 people have died violently above the normal mortality rate. Including non-violent deaths that are linked to the war, the total is estimated to be more than 650,000. SOURCE:

One of the most important developments in the global fight against HIV/AIDS is the recognition of the role of gender in fueling the spread and increasing the burden of the epidemic. This document compiles key online resources that describe the current understanding of, and responses to, the effects of gender on HIV/AIDS at the international level. Resources were selected to provide a balanced approach that addresses both men's and women's concerns, vulnerabilities, challenges, and responses to gender and HIV/AIDS issues. A special focus on gender-based violence is included because of the tremendous impact of sexual violence on risk of HIV infection. SOURCE:

Selective Bibliography On Landmines

Landmines are defined as "explosive items which may be planted in the path of the enemy to hinder his movement or to deny him access to certain territory. The mines are generally concealed and so rigged that they will be initiated by the enemy's presence or contact, except in instances where they may be initiated by remote control. Landmines may produce casualties by direct explosive force, fragmentation, shaped-charge effect, or the release of harassing agents or lethal gas." (from Dictionary of Weapons and Military Terms, 1973.) This selective list of materials was prepared for the Conference on Humanitarian Demining and the International Effort to Ban Landmines held at the University of California, Irvine on 8 May 2000 and updated since then to offer interested persons some direction to relevant and recent information on this important subject, but is not an exhaustive bibliography. One should consider searching a variety of social science, political and scientific indexing tools for additional sources. These resources are suitable to be utilized in classroom teaching and anthologies on this topic. SOURCE:
